Memory
Why we have chosen to reminisce image instead of sounds, text or
scent?
Of all our senses, vision is the strongest and most influential
in memory formation. It is no wonder then that our autobiographical
memories are primarily visual and that they are so important to us.
By
looking back at images we get to know more about ourself. The images
have remained the same, but everything around them has changed.
It show all kinds of happenings from the past in a particular context.
Image with specific emotional values takes you back to a certain
moment.
A photo is able to create a time machine effect in this way.
The value of simple memory is very easy to explain, especially for
evolutionary reasons.
It makes sure that you have an competitive
advantage over others. In other words: survival of the fittest. But
nostalgia is another matter.
When we go through our old pictures, we
feel a wonderful sense of nostalgia. Nostalgia is often very bittersweet.
We smile when we remember a poignant memory, and at the same
time,
there’s some sadness as we realize that that moment from the
past can’t ever be replicated. But, feelings of nostalgia can make us
better people.
It creates the feeling that life has roots and continuity.
Nostalgia has been shown to counteract loneliness, boredom and
anxiety.
It makes people more generous to strangers and more tolerant
of outsiders. Nostalgia, in other words, helps us connect to ourselves
and to others.
This explains why we love to feel this nostalgic feeling. It
not only lets us relive the past, it truly helps us live in the present and
get ready for the future.
